Setting Up Odoo Development Environment on Ubuntu with VS Code

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for setting up an Odoo development environment on Ubuntu using VS Code, covering options for virtual environments, Docker, and GitHub integration.

Prerequisites

: Ensure you have Ubuntu installed and running.


Bash

sudo apt update && sudo apt install git

Choose Your Approach:

Write one or two paragraphs describing your product or services.

This approach isolates dependencies for each Odoo version.

  • Install Python 3 and Pip:
sudo apt install python3 python3-pip
  • Create a virtual environment:
python3 -m venv odoo-env
source odoo-env/bin/activate
  • Install Odoo dependencies:

pip install wheel psycopg2-binary 

# Install specific Odoo version (e.g., Odoo 17) 

pip install odoo==17.0.0

This approach uses Docker containers for a pre-configured Odoo environment.

docker run -d --name odoo-dev odoo:17.0.0
  • Connect to the database:

docker exec -it odoo-dev psql -h localhost -p 5432 -U odoo

3. Development Server (Any Approach):

  • Start the Odoo server:

For Virtual Environment:

docker exec -it odoo-dev odoo-bin
  • Access Odoo in your browser: Open http://localhost:8069


Setting Up VS Code:

  • Open VS Code.
  • Install Python extension: Search for "Python" in the extensions tab and install the official extension.
  • Open a folder: Open the folder containing your Odoo project or create a new one.

Optional: Git Integration:

  • Initialize a Git repository: Open the terminal within VS Code and run git init to initialize a Git repository in your project folder.
  • Connect to GitHub: Create a new repository on GitHub and connect your local repository using the following commands:
